Action Hockey Basic Rules

1. Seven (7) players a side, plus 3 substitutes. In the case of mixed netball, each team must have a maximum of 3 males and 4 females. The minimum number a team can take the court with is 5 players.

3. Nets -

(1) Side nets and roof nets from part of the playing area.

(2) Back nets are out. If the ball hits the back net a "Pass-In" will be awarded to the opposing team. This includes the ball first touching the back net and then going through the goal ring in an attempt to score a goal.

(3) The nets may be used to regain balance only. A player with the ball may not pass the ball while leaning on the net. The player must re-establish balance before making a pass or shot.

(4) The back net is out of play when the ball touches it, however if a player is leaning on the back net, with the ball not making contact against the net, the player may regain balance before making the pass or shot.

(5) A player may not block a plater on the net. This will result in a penalty for Obstruction.


4. The Toss Up:- The two players contesting the ball must attempt to grab the ball with two hands. If a player attempts to hit/bat the ball, a penalty pass shall be awarded to the non-offending team.

5. Obstruction:- In general play a player may not take up a position to interfere with or block an opposition player.

6. Play in the Goal Circle:- If the Goal Shooter's or Goal Attack' one foot lands outside the Goal Circle, the player cannot move into the Goal Circle and shoot. The player must pass.

7. Behaviour Code:-

(1) The Umpire's interpretation of any rules shall be final.

(2) Any player engaging in disorderly conduct shall receive a warning. If behaviour continues they shall be sent from the Court and shall not resume play until at least the completion of that half or at the Umpire's discretion. No Substitution will be permitted for that player.

8. Mixed Teams:-

(1) Maximum of 3 men.

(2) A male player must take up position in each court Third. i.e.

One male must play Goal Shooter or Goal Attac
One male must play centre, wing Attack or Wing Defence
One male must play Goal Keeper or Goal Defence.

9. Substitution / Team Change.

A Substitution or team change may be made after a goal is scored, after an interval or after stoppage of play for an injury. A maximun of three substitutes or team changes may be made by each team during a game. The opposing Captain and Umpires must be notified about any changes.

10. Playing apparel deemed not to be in the good image of Action Netball is not allowed, Such as:

(1) Bare Feet
(2) Stockinged Feet
(3) Jeans
(4) Black soled shoes or tackies
(5) Everyday footwear
